Getting Started

1. Visit the Chrome Web Store (link in the Install button above) and click "Add to Chrome"

2. Click "Add extension" in the popup

3. BookmarkScrub will appear in your browser toolbar

4. Click the icon to open the extension and start scanning

BookmarkScrub requests the following permissions:

  • Bookmarks: To read and organize your bookmarks
  • Storage: To save your settings locally
  • Tabs: To check if bookmarked pages still exist (dead link detection)
  • Notifications: To alert you when new threats are detected

We only use these permissions for the stated purposes. Your browsing history and personal data are never accessed or stored.

Scanning Bookmarks

Scan time depends on your bookmark count:

  • Under 500 bookmarks: ~30 seconds
  • 500-1,000 bookmarks: ~1-2 minutes
  • 1,000+ bookmarks: ~2-3 minutes

We process bookmarks in batches and show real-time progress during the scan.

The free scan shows you everything:

  • All security threats (javascript: bookmarks, suspicious domains)
  • Dead links that no longer work
  • Tracking parameters in URLs
  • AI-suggested categories for each bookmark
  • Folder reorganization suggestions

Pro is only required to apply the changes. You can see everything for free.

Security Scanning

We scan for:

  • JavaScript bookmarklets: Code that runs with full page access when clicked
  • Data URLs: Embedded content that can display fake pages
  • Suspicious domains: .xyz, .tk, .buzz and other high-risk TLDs
  • Tracking parameters: utm_*, fbclid, gclid, and 40+ others

Yes. Security scanning (malware, dead links, trackers) runs entirely in your browser. For AI categorization, bookmark URLs and titles are sent to our AI service — but never stored.

We never:

  • Store your bookmarks on our servers
  • Access your browsing history
  • Sell or share your data
  • Track your behavior

AI Organization

Our AI analyzes bookmark URLs and titles to understand content type. It then assigns each bookmark to one of 15 categories:

  • Work, Personal, Finance, Shopping
  • News, Entertainment, Social
  • Learning, Reference, Tools
  • Travel, Health, Food
  • Technology, Other

You can review and adjust categories before applying changes.

Yes, in several ways:

  • Before applying: Review all changes in the preview screen
  • Chrome's bookmark manager: You can manually move bookmarks back
  • Chrome backup: Export bookmarks before applying (we recommend this for large reorganizations)

To export: Go to chrome://bookmarks → Three dots → Export bookmarks

Real-time Protection

With Pro, BookmarkScrub monitors new bookmarks as you save them. When you add a bookmark:

  • We scan it for security threats
  • Strip tracking parameters automatically (optional)
  • Suggest a category
  • Alert you if something looks suspicious

You can configure these settings in the extension options.

Troubleshooting

Try these steps:

  • Make sure you've granted bookmark permissions when prompted
  • Refresh the extension by clicking the icon again
  • Disable and re-enable the extension in chrome://extensions
  • Restart Chrome

If the issue persists, contact support with your Chrome version.

Large bookmark collections (5,000+) can take longer. If scan seems stuck:

  • Check your internet connection
  • Keep the extension popup open during scan
  • Avoid using Chrome heavily during scan

If it's still not working, try scanning in a new Chrome profile to isolate the issue.
